Searching the Marketplace
Go to Marketplace → Browse or Marketplace → Search.
Quick search: Type in the road name, manufacturer, or model number you're looking for. Results appear instantly as you type.
Filtered search: Use the sidebar filters to narrow by:
- Scale: HO, N, O, G, Z, S, or custom
- Category: Locomotive, Freight Car, Passenger Car, Caboose, Structure, Accessory
- Manufacturer: Browse a list of all manufacturers currently represented in active listings
- Road Name: Find all items lettered for a specific prototype railroad
- Condition: Mint through Fair
- Price Range: Set a minimum and maximum
- DCC Status: DCC Ready, DCC Installed, Sound Installed, DC Only
You can combine any of these filters. Save a filtered search as an Alert — you'll receive a notification whenever a new listing matches your criteria.
Reading a Listing
Each listing page shows:
- Photos — typically multiple, including close-ups of any issues
- AI-verified identification — the AI's confirmed manufacturer, model, road name and number, scale, era
- Condition assessment — the seller's stated condition with any specific notes
- Comparable sales — recent completed sales for the same model, so you can judge whether the price is fair
- Seller profile — their rating, how long they've been on the platform, other active listings
Buying
Buy Now: At the listed price, immediately. Your payment is processed through Stripe.
Make Offer: Propose a different price. The seller has 48 hours to accept, counter, or decline.
Watch: Save the listing without committing — you'll be notified of price changes or if the item is about to expire.
After You Buy
- You receive an order confirmation with the seller's stated handling time
- Once the seller ships, you receive a tracking number notification
- When the item arrives, review it against the listing photos
- In your order: click Confirm Receipt — this releases payment to the seller
- Leave a rating — brief, honest, helps the community
If the Item Isn't as Described
If what arrives doesn't match the listing description or photos:
- Open the order in Marketplace → My Purchases
- Click Open Dispute within 5 days of delivery
- Describe the discrepancy with photos
- RailScanPro mediates — the most common resolution is a partial or full refund
Most sellers are honest collectors who accurately describe their items. Disputes are rare but the protection is there.
Building a Want List
Go to Marketplace → My Wants to create a persistent wish list. For each item you want:
- Specify scale, manufacturer, model, condition requirements, maximum price
- RailScanPro notifies you automatically when a matching listing is created
This is the most efficient way to find rare or specific items without checking daily.
