Opening of the St. Petersburg–Moscow Railway

The St. Petersburg–Moscow Railway, spanning 650 kilometers, marked Russia's entry into the industrial age of rail transport. Engineered with broad gauge to match Russian standards, it overcame vast swamps and forests using innovative embankment techniques. Tsar Nicholas I personally championed the project, viewing it as essential for military mobility and economic unity. The inaugural train, hauled by early 4-4-0 locomotives built in the United States, carried dignitaries and mail. This line later became the foundation of the Soviet rail network and demonstrated how rail could bind a sprawling empire together.
