Pike's Peak Cog Railway Summit Reached

On September 19, 1893, the Manitou and Pike's Peak Railway completed its inaugural run to the summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado, marking a triumph of cog railway engineering in the American West. Founded by General William Jackson Palmer, the line used the Abt rack system to conquer grades up to 25 percent. This innovation opened tourism to the iconic mountain, previously accessible only by foot or mule, and boosted Colorado's economy. The railway's steam locomotives, later supplemented by diesel, became symbols of mountain railroading and continue to inspire modelers with their unique rack operations and breathtaking scenery.
