Tyne and Wear Metro First Section Opens

September 19, 1982, saw the opening of the first section of the Tyne and Wear Metro between Haymarket and Tynemouth, introducing modern light rail to the UK. This 34-mile network integrated former British Rail lines with new tunnels under Newcastle, using articulated cars from Metro-Cammell. It revitalized regional transport after industrial decline, connecting Sunderland and Newcastle while pioneering integrated ticketing. The project demonstrated successful conversion of heavy rail infrastructure and influenced later UK light rail schemes.
