On June 11, 1913, the Canadian Northern Railway achieved full transcontinental status with the completion of its western and eastern segments. Founded by William Mackenzie and Donald Mann, the line stretched from Vancouver to Halifax using innovative mountain engineering through the Rockies. It competed directly with the Canadian Pacific Railway, offering lower rates for grain and immigrant traffic. The railroad played a pivotal role in settling the Canadian prairies and integrating remote regions into the national economy. Though later merged into Canadian National Railways in 1923, its construction techniques and route choices left a lasting legacy on North American rail geography.
