On June 11, 1895, Kyoto debuted Japan's first electric streetcar line, operated by the Kyoto Electric Railway Company. Powered by overhead trolley wires and using American-style single-truck cars, the 3.5 km route from the city center to the suburbs replaced slower horse-drawn trams. Engineer Ichisuke Fujioka, often called the father of Japanese electrical engineering, oversaw the electrification. This innovation reduced travel times dramatically, boosted tourism to historic sites, and spurred urban development. It set the template for electric traction across Japan, influencing subway and rail systems in Tokyo and Osaka while showcasing Meiji-era modernization amid rapid industrialization.
