On May 26, 1873, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway drove the final spike at the Colorado state line near Granada, Colorado. This 60-mile extension from the Kansas border transformed the struggling prairie railroad into a transcontinental contender. Engineer A. A. Robinson overcame harsh weather and supply shortages using 4-4-0 American-type locomotives. The new route immediately boosted cattle shipping from southern Colorado ranches to Kansas City stockyards. It also set the stage for the later Raton Pass crossing and the famous race with the Denver & Rio Grande. The arrival of regular service brought homesteaders and ended the isolation of southeastern Colorado, cementing the Santa Fe's reputation for aggressive western expansion.
