On May 28, 1844, the Dublin and Kingstown Railway opened its 1.75-mile extension from Kingstown to Dalkey using the innovative atmospheric railway system, where trains were propelled by air pressure in a pipe between the rails. Engineered by William Dargan with assistance from Isambard Kingdom Brunel, this marked an early experiment in non-steam traction. The system operated successfully for several years before conversion to conventional steam, influencing later vacuum and pneumatic railway concepts across Europe and demonstrating engineering adaptability in challenging coastal terrain.
