On May 28, 1889, the first revenue train operated on the Randtram line in the Transvaal Republic, connecting the gold mining centers of Johannesburg and Boksburg. Built by the Netherlands-South African Railway Company under President Paul Kruger, this 3 ft 6 in gauge line was critical to the Witwatersrand gold rush economy. It featured early use of Cape gauge standardization and helped establish rail infrastructure that later expanded into the vast South African network, boosting mining exports and regional development.
