On May 29, 1848, the York and North Midland Railway, led by the controversial 'Railway King' George Hudson, inaugurated its extension from York to Scarborough. The line crossed the Yorkshire Wolds with impressive viaducts and cuttings, using contemporary 0-4-2 locomotives. It dramatically boosted tourism to the emerging resort town and integrated Scarborough into the national network during the height of Railway Mania. The route survives today as part of the scenic North Yorkshire Coast Line, beloved by heritage rail enthusiasts.
