June 11, 1927

Summary

Construction began on Japan's first subway line, the Tokyo Underground Railway.

Full Story

Groundbreaking for Tokyo's first subway occurred on June 11, 1927, with the Tokyo Underground Railway's 2.2 km line between Ueno and Asakusa. Designed by engineer Noritsugu Hayakawa and inspired by New York and London systems, it used cut-and-cover methods and electric multiple units from Hitachi. Overcoming dense urban geology and earthquakes, the line opened in 1927 as Asia's first subway, carrying over 100,000 passengers daily by 1930. It revolutionized urban mobility in earthquake-prone Japan and evolved into today's Ginza Line, influencing post-war rapid transit expansions worldwide.
