The consolidation of the Flint & Pere Marquette, Chicago & West Michigan, and Detroit Grand Rapids & Western formed the Pere Marquette on June 22, 1902. This 2,000-mile network improved car-ferry operations across Lake Michigan and connected Midwest industrial centers. It introduced efficient 4-6-0 locomotives for passenger service and expanded freight to Canadian markets. The merger exemplified early 20th-century railroad rationalization, influencing later Chessie System development.
