On June 29, 1855, the Panama Railway finished its 47-mile line across the Isthmus of Panama, a monumental engineering achievement that predated the canal by decades. Promoted by American investors including William Aspinwall, the project overcame malaria, yellow fever, and rugged jungle terrain using thousands of laborers, many from the Caribbean and Ireland. Early 4-4-0 locomotives hauled passengers and gold rush freight, slashing travel time from weeks to hours. Its opening transformed global trade routes, boosted the California Gold Rush economy, and provided critical lessons in tropical railroad construction that later informed the Panama Canal effort. The line remains a vital artery today.
