Full Story
July 2, 1957 marked initial high-speed trials on the Tokaido line test section using experimental electric multiple units. Post-WWII reconstruction and the 1964 Olympics deadline spurred innovation under JNR president Shinji Sogō. Engineers addressed earthquake risks and tight curves with aerodynamic designs reaching 210 km/h. This paved the way for the world's first dedicated high-speed passenger service.
