Summary

The Sonora Railway inaugurated service between Nogales and Hermosillo, linking the US border to Mexico's Pacific coast.

Full Story

On July 7, 1881, the Sonora Railway, financed by American investors including William J. Palmer, opened its initial 170-mile segment from Nogales to Hermosillo. This standard-gauge line traversed harsh Sonoran Desert terrain using 4-4-0 American-type locomotives, overcoming steep grades and water scarcity with innovative tank stops. It enabled efficient export of silver, copper, and produce to US markets via the Southern Pacific connection. The project exemplified post-Civil War cross-border rail diplomacy and spurred northern Mexico's economic integration. Later extended to Guaymas, it became the backbone of the Ferrocarril del Pacífico and influenced subsequent Mexican rail nationalization policies in the 20th century.
