Full Story

On July 8, 1846, the Attica and Buffalo Railroad inaugurated service on its initial 31-mile line between Attica and Buffalo, New York. This development occurred amid the rapid railroad boom of the 1840s, driven by the need to move grain, lumber, and passengers more efficiently than canals allowed. Prominent local investors and engineers oversaw construction using strap-iron rails and wood-burning 4-4-0 locomotives typical of the era. It later integrated into the New York Central system, playing a key role in connecting the Great Lakes region to eastern markets and supporting westward migration before the Civil War.
