The completion of the Randtram line extension on July 10, 1890, connected the burgeoning gold fields of Johannesburg to the port of Lourenço Marques (Maputo) via the Netherlands-South African Railway Company. This 50-mile segment featured steep gradients and required innovative use of 0-6-0 tank locomotives to handle the terrain. The project, backed by President Paul Kruger, reduced transport costs for gold exports dramatically and strengthened economic ties between the Transvaal Republic and Portuguese East Africa. It played a pivotal role in the lead-up to the Second Boer War by improving logistics and highlighting railway infrastructure's strategic importance in southern Africa.
