Construction of the Central Australia Railway reached Beltana, allowing the first revenue train to operate from Port Augusta. The narrow-gauge line crossed harsh desert terrain using wood-burning locomotives and was vital for connecting remote cattle stations to coastal ports. The route later evolved into the standard-gauge Adelaide–Darwin line, preserving the Ghan name and its romantic outback heritage.
