The final spike was driven on August 2, 1883, near Gold Creek, Montana, completing the Northern Pacific Railway's 6,800-mile transcontinental line from Minnesota to Washington Territory. Led by financier Henry Villard, the project featured engineering feats such as the Stampede Tunnel and massive timber trestles. The opening connected Pacific ports to eastern markets, boosted wheat and timber industries, and facilitated settlement of the northern plains. It also introduced the first transcontinental Pullman sleeping car service, enhancing passenger comfort on long-distance journeys.
