August 7, 1885 marked the arrival of the first Denver and Rio Grande narrow-gauge train in Silverton, completing a challenging 45-mile extension through the rugged San Juan Mountains. Built with 3-foot gauge track to navigate steep grades and tight curves, the line used powerful 2-8-0 locomotives to haul silver ore from the mines. This engineering feat connected remote mining communities to national markets, boosting Colorado's economy during the silver boom. The route later became the famous Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, preserved for heritage tourism and recognized as a National Historic Landmark.
