On August 15, 1870, the first train operated over the newly completed Denver Pacific Railway, a 106-mile line from Denver north to Cheyenne. This connection allowed Denver to join the Union Pacific main line, ending its isolation and sparking rapid economic growth in Colorado. Key figures included territorial governor John Evans and railroad promoter William J. Palmer. The line used standard gauge track and initially relied on Union Pacific locomotives. It marked a pivotal step in integrating the Rocky Mountain region into the national rail system and later became part of the Colorado & Southern Railway.
