On August 16, 1925, groundbreaking occurred for the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, Japan's pioneering underground railway between Ueno and Asakusa. Designed by engineers inspired by New York's IRT, it used cut-and-cover methods amid dense urban streets and opened in 1927 with 600-volt DC third-rail power. The 2.2 km line carried 100,000 daily passengers by 1930, easing streetcar congestion and setting standards for Japan's extensive subway systems. It survived WWII bombings and remains a vital artery today.
