August 16, 1883, saw the Northern Pacific Railway drive the final spike near Gold Creek, Montana, finishing a 2,800-mile line from Minnesota to Washington Territory. Led by Henry Villard, the project featured massive trestles over the Missouri River and the Stampede Tunnel through the Cascades. It opened the Pacific Northwest to settlement, carried the first transcontinental Pullman cars, and competed with the Union Pacific. The event spurred the 1883 World's Fair in Portland and influenced US westward expansion policies.
