On August 17, 1883, the Northern Pacific Railway drove the last spike near Gold Creek, Montana, completing its transcontinental route from Minnesota to Tacoma. Led by Henry Villard, the project overcame Rocky Mountain passes and used innovative snow sheds. This opened vast timber and wheat regions to markets, spurred settlement, and competed with the Union Pacific. The event featured a grand ceremony with President Chester A. Arthur and highlighted the shift to steel rails and larger locomotives like the 4-4-0 American types.
