On August 21, 1830, the Best Friend of Charleston, built by the West Point Foundry, became the first American-built steam locomotive to enter regular passenger service in the United States. Operated by the South Carolina Canal and Rail Road Company, it hauled passengers and freight along a six-mile line from Charleston. This event marked a pivotal moment in American transportation history, demonstrating the viability of steam power on rails and spurring rapid railroad expansion across the young nation. Engineer Nicholas Darrell operated the locomotive, which featured a vertical boiler design. The success encouraged further investment in rail infrastructure, connecting southern ports to inland markets and contributing to economic growth before the Civil War.
