The route crossed challenging terrain including the Rocky Mountains and Cascade Range, requiring innovative tunneling and trestle construction. Key figures included financier Henry Villard and chief engineer John F. Stevens. The arrival boosted Pacific Northwest settlement, timber, and agricultural industries while connecting isolated communities to national markets.
