La Prairie

September 9, 1836

Summary

The Champlain and St. Lawrence Railroad inaugurates Canada's first steam-powered railway line between La Prairie and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.

Full Story

On September 9, 1836, the Champlain and St. Lawrence Railroad began operations with the locomotive Dorchester, marking the birth of steam railroading in Canada. Built to connect the St. Lawrence River at La Prairie with the Richelieu River, the 16-mile line used wooden rails plated with iron and was engineered to bypass rapids on the St. Lawrence. Key figures included engineer Peter McGill and British locomotive builder Robert Stephenson. The opening demonstrated the viability of rail transport in harsh Canadian winters and spurred further expansion, eventually becoming part of the Grand Trunk Railway. This event connected broader North American trade networks and inspired modelers with its early 0-4-0 locomotive and wooden passenger cars.
